Specialist Carer Support
Carers often face emotionally complex parenting tasks. Many of our care-experienced young people have not had good enough caregiving and therefore find it hard to recognise or trust it. Many have not felt worthy or capable of receiving it. Many do not feel that they can put their trust in the world and the future. In my practice, I use a systemic strength-based approach with the core belief that problems and their solutions are best understood and explored within relationships with others and the world around us. With this belief, empowering and supporting our carers to keep in mind their young person’s needs (in often unpredictable, all day every day parenting requirements) is often our best way of making a difference. Ideally this work is pro-active rather than reactive and crisis driven.
I very much advocate for and offer both individually tailored consultations and group trainings and ongoing workshops to foster carers, connected persons and adoptive parents, as well as birth parents around areas such as:
- Moving in strategies (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP informed)
- Distress management, emotional regulation, and behavioural management (for both young people and carers!)
- Understanding and managing loss and grief
- Processing and managing discrimination and racial trauma
- Helping a young person, family and network create a narrative around their experiences (life story work)
- Non-violent Resistant (NVR) informed intervention
I also facilitate support groups and offering drop-in clinics for carers around parenting dilemmas
