Doing Better Therapy
‘Doing Better’ is a call to action. Maya Angelou invited us to ‘Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better’.
'Doing Better' is a maxim for both client and clinician in our work. We work with self-compassion as we learn and then act in order to do better. We offer sessions in Central and North-West London and online.
At Doing Better Therapy we believe that the therapist’s role is to treat clients first as fellow humans, with dignity and respect, to understand and help clients to help themselves, even with very difficult family and relationship dilemmas. As part of working together we very much take socio-cultural factors into account, thinking about problems and solutions in the wider context.
Working together is a process of discovery using curiosity and a very broad range of knowledge bases and experience to find your best resolutions. Core beliefs include: clients are experts on their own lives, no-one is beyond help or below the threshold for needing it. Therapy is a non-judgmental co-creative and solution-focused reflective space and we want to help you find the best fit for your needs (whether that is with us or an alternative service). Depending on need, we seek to do this work as succinctly as possible.
In a supervisory and consultative role, one of my core values is that when it comes to anti-oppressive practice, we could all do better. I invite myself and others to be self-reflexive and vigilant around doing no harm. I offer supervision, workshops and professional services to those wanting to do this work.
This value of wanting to grow in my knowing and doing better (both individually and collectively in our profession) is central to both the direct work that I do with families, individuals, and systems around them, as well as in supervision and professional development.
I keep myself in a community of others striving to know and do better to keep myself accountable, persistent, and in dialogue particularly around anti-oppressive practice.
I also hope that when asked ‘how are you doing?’ ; "I'm doing better" will be client’s response as they begin to find their resolutions.
